The power of the human body is truly amazing. As I listen to my professors talk about the body on a molecular level, it's hard to imagine that all those reactions are happening inside me. As a health professional I have been taught nearly everything about the body from how it gains energy from food, to how it uses that energy to move muscles, to how the brain sends signals to the organs, and to how the heart keeps all of it going. But sometimes I get caught up in all of that and forget how truly amazing it is that I can walk, talk, see, breathe, hear and smell. Even though my body has always been there for me, I have not always been the kindest to it. I have put alcohol into my body causing it to alter my mind. I have pushed it to keep moving through injuries. I have forced it to stay awake so I can study for a few more hours. I have deprived it of water and food at certain times when my eating disorder has taken over. I have not kept my body warm enough or cool enough. I have let it get sick and not given it the medicine it needs. However, my body is mine and I wouldn't trade it for another. It is what allows me to experience life through sites, smells, sounds, textures, temperatures, and tastes. So this post is name all the things my body gives me that I am grateful for.
I am grateful for the... hugs I can give and receive. colors and shapes of flowers that I can see. sounds of animals that I can hear. hands I can hold. kisses I can give. warmth of the sun I can feel on my skin. flavors of food I can taste. smiles and laughter that I can share. strength my muscles and bones provide. memories my mind can recall. names and faces that I can remember. There are so many more I could spend all day writing them. But the purpose is to take a step back and tell our body thank you for all the things it allows us to do. It deserves to be loved and nourished. It deserves a nap, a hot shower, a massage and a brownie every once and awhile. Your body is yours, no one else's. It is not perfect but it is what makes you human. It is alive and that's all that counts.
